The Authority of the Believer Part 3 – Ps Ian Kruithoff

God created man to rule and be fruitful.

Heb 2:7,8 “You crowned him with glory and honour and placed everything under his feet.” When God subjected all things to him, He left nothing outside of his control. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.

One day on the new earth we will reign again as Adam did. We are learning to rule now. The main area we learn to rule over is ourselves. Eve blamed the devil, Adam, the woman, but it was their inability to take authority over their own actions and desires that allowed the devil to tempt and defeat them. Blame and excuses will never build a fruitful life.

Prov 25:28 He that has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

If our spirit needs ruling then it is an unruly spirit. This is not an evil spirit but our human spirit given to do evil. An unruly spirit rejects rule. An unruly spirit is of course ruled, by whims, passions, hurts, temperament, rebellions, pride, temptations, etc. – everyone is ruled by something.

The Proverbs text says that the problem with an unruly spirit is that it’s like broken walls. The walls of a city are it’s authority. It stands in a position of strength. When the defences are gone, when boundaries are destroyed – things get in that are better kept out.

There are lots of broken walls that allow lots of negative things on the inside.
If we learn to rule our spirit we rebuild the walls and take authority in our life.

The Bottom line; submit to authority to have authority.

1. Acknowledge Jesus as Lord as well as saviour. Bow the head in submission – daily. Practice “nevertheless not my will but yours”.
Romans 8:5–8 gives the reason why people have trouble with submission; “

2. Submit to the rule of the Word of God. Know the word and understand it. Knowledge is power – Prov 24:5 A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge enhances his strength. To know what to do is the beginning of authority. You can take charge when you know what to do.

3. A. Walk under right order rule. B. Walk away from wrong order rule.

Submit to the rule of church leaders.
Submit to one another.
Submit to authorities in government and
Submit to authority in the home.

They provide an environment in which we can learn to rule our spirit.

4. Strengthen your spirit by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

“If you are lead by the Spirit you will not fulfil the desires of the flesh”. Galatians 5:16

“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources God will give you  mighty inner strength through his holy spirit.” Eph 3:16.

5. Destroy the strongholds

Pr 16:32 Whoever controls his temper is better than a warrior, and anyone who has control of his spirit is better than someone who captures a city.

We tear down arguments, and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 co 10:5.

6. Wrestle your physical life into alignment.

Our spirit is either influenced by our fresh or by the Spirit. A weak spirit will bend to the flesh. A strong spirit will bow to the Spirit and influence everything else.

In First Corinthians 9:27 Paul writes: “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection” (NKJV). The disciples told Jesus their spirits were willing but their flesh was weak. How come our weaknesses are so strong? Weak flesh requires stronger spirit.

Sin will weaken you. Put it outside strong walls ruled by a strong spirit.
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. (Colossians 3:5-8)

Walls: Limit access. Provide protection. Set boundaries. Declare ownership. Defines rulership.

Remember Prov 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
